Hello,
I've been using flavours of VNC for a about a year now, mostly on Windows
but occasionally on Linux. I recently installed RealVNC 4.0b4 onto my linux
box (Debian unstable/testing, 2.4.20 kernel & Xfree 4.3.0 IIRC, installed
using Knoppix):

Elke,
Are you saying that VNC *will* run on your computer, *with* the NIS firewall
running, but that if you also run NIS proxy then it won't?
Cheers,

Hello Wez,
not quiteI was trouble shooting and that is why I mentioned the NIS
proxy. VNC viewer will not run at all when NIS is enabled, regardless of
the setting given for the NIS proxy.

running the vnc server. On t
Hi,
I am trying to make it so that the people sitting in front of the 'host'
machine cannot shut down the vnc server.
Looking at the documentation in vnc server for advanced options, I see what
looks like instructions on how to make that happen, by changing a value in the
system registry.

None of them are, you must create them.

Hi,
I was wondering if someone could help me out with a couple questions.
I have VNV 4.0b4 installed on my windows workstation and version 3.3.3 of
the server installed on an AIX box. The problem I have is that I had a
connection open to the server from my pc, but then my pc crashed due to a

well that makes sense! Being a somewhat non-technical person, just how
should I list the 'values'?
Thanks,
Elke

Elke,
The problem is that you are reading the documentation for VNC 3 and the
AllowProperties setting, even though you are actually running VNC 4, which
doesn't need that option.
The VNC 4 documentation is at http://www.realvnc.com/v4.

Hello,
hmmm.I've read through the documentation for VNC 4. You state that VNC
4 'doesn't need that option';
I may be having a mental block here, but where in VNC 4 does it tell me how
to make it so that the server cannot be shut down by someone sitting in
front of the computer?

UPDATE:
Well, I've done something to my settings again.
The Transparent Bridge is set for sure on the ActionTec modem. No question there.
Thanks to some late night assistance from Peter, I have some legacy LAN properties
turned off now (disabled) which we suspect were interfering.

I think under NT4, 2000, XP, etc... when you install the server then the option to
close the server service is not there and if the logged in user does not have
administrative privileges then the user can't stop the VNC server service thus can't
shut off the VNC server.

I didn't notice that you mentioned VNC 4 or I would have said something
the first time.

Elke,
When running in Service-Mode under Windows NT/2K/XP/2K3 and so on, VNC 4 can
only be shut down via the Service Control Manager. Under 95/98/Me, it can
be shut down via the Start menu, regardless of the user.

Another update:
after finally caving in and paying to talk to someone at Symantec, I was
told the following:
NIS 2003 basically was set up to recognize and 'block' anything that was
classified as 'spyware' and that VNC was abused in that manner; the tech

Hi, I've been using the VNC service for about a year and a half now. Just
today it started acting really weird. Whenever I try to connect to a server
through the main VNC Viewer, after I type in the password, the box pops up
for about half a second, and then dissappears. Whenever I try to log on

Has anyone tried compiling RealVNC 4.0beta4 against XOrg
(xorg.freedesktop.org) or XFree86 4.4.x? I'm having trouble getting
it to compile against the xorg-x11 package in Fedora devel.

Hi,
I am using windows xp pro; even when I establish a user account, I am still
quite able to shut down the vnc server from the start menu. I have looked
at the os' program access, but I don't find anything that would apply here -

First, RealVNC is really great, thank you!
Very much worth supporting.

This may be a windoze limitation. I have a situation where a

The client has 1600x1280 and the server has two 10
I looked back through a couple months mail and saw nothing on this issue:
How can I increase the number of X clients that I can run in a VNC session?
How many clients should I be able to start?
I think I get quite a few less than I used to get with Xmanager so it seems
that vncserver is limiting

Hi,
I am using Slackware Linux, FVM95 and Windows98.
While using VNC X-windows, in xterm, my keyboard character "5" is
working as a backspace character.
Only for a particular vnc account this is happening and from the same
system when I login using another account, everything works fine.
