to contact its author. Look at the section called "How do I contact you?" and you'll

obsolete, but we have assumed their continued existence for compatibility
reasons in all subsequent VNC development. In addition to these legacy
numbers and those used for standard VNC encodings (RRE, ZRLE, Hextile, etc)

are calling "winvnc -install" (or "winvnc4 -register") when the WinVNC (or
WinVNC4) service already exists on that machine.

Thank you for your quick reply. The firewall is disabled in XP. I can
telnet to host:5900 and get RFB 003.003. The viewer seems to auth ok it
just does not display the initial screen. Any other ideas?

First, it seems odd that you would have a box running Solaris but call the machine
"linux"
Second: the most likely cause of your problem is that you did not succeed in starting
vncserver. Check if the process Xvnc is
running:
ps -ef | grep vnc
If it is not running then check the log files.

It sounds as though TridiaVNC is crashing on your Windows 98 systems. You
might wish to contact Tridia for support on that. Alternatively, you could
upgrade to VNC 4 (http://www.realvnc.com/v4).

"crashes"? Is the problem correllated only with the monitor being present,

Basically, the error you're seeing suggests that the CotVNC viewer software
is becoming confused into thinking the server is using ZlibHex, when in fact
it is not. Assuming that you are running the

Both client and server are 3.3.7. Win2k works great - no problems. XP I

Thanks to all who offered assistance. The problem was due to packet
fragmenting through the vpn. The resolution was to reduce the MTU size on
the windows me server to 1362.
