That happened to me on Ubuntu 12.04, and I solve it using Gnome Tweak
Tool -> Show Icons on Desktop, or instead of this, Filemanager manage
desktop.

you find in Thunderbird?
You can also try: Seamonkey (Mozilla), Evolution (with calendar and
other things), Kmail (a little tricky but with good features).

Settings what languages are preferred. Usually is English.
The same for Chrome. See what fonts they use by default, may be is a
font problem.
