HDTV as display - problem with grub

I have been using grub to multiboot successfully for years and I think I understand fairly well what I am doing. Awhile back my display went belly up so I started using my HDTV as a display through it's VGA port. It seems to work OK except that grub will not display it's menu on boot up. I get a

I have had this, or a similar problem, with fc14. My problem is that the dvd playing program (I believe it is XINE) says it can't find /dev/dvd. That is because there is no /dev/dvd. My fix is to open mc go to /dev and copy dvd1 to dvd. I tried to use a command line and run "cp /dev/dvd1 /dev/d
