It used to happen to me some time ago, on Fedora 20 & 21. Mate was
working well, but I always had to start Compiz manually.
Now I'll try your tip, maybe it works for me too.

startup.

GRUB_TERMINAL_OUTPUT="gfxterm"
and then
GRUB_GFXMODE="auto"
That works fine for a Full HD monitor.

konqueror (but not dolphin) supports the camera:/ protocol and can see the
