We are doing a security audit and it shows the httpd in the MacOS is outdated
and needs to be upgraded to the current version. But there is no Mac installer
for httpd. Apple doesn't seem to have an installer available to update it
either. How can we upgrade to current on the Mac?

Thanks @William for the suggestion. I haven't tried strace, I'll look into
it, although I've now experienced the crash without the 2 long running
processes - so it seems like it may be just the application under load when
the varnish cache is first cleared that causes the problem, which is not

I'd suggest reporting the issue to the php maintainers (https://bugs.php.net/).
It may ring a bell there..
