Thanks @William for the suggestion. I haven't tried strace, I'll look into
it, although I've now experienced the crash without the 2 long running
processes - so it seems like it may be just the application under load when
the varnish cache is first cleared that causes the problem, which is not
very encouraging..

@Yann thanks for the pointer, I'll get in touch with the PHP maintainers to
see if they've had any similar reports.
