i'm migrating some old machines with a older linux to uml. I tried to make
kernel 2.6.x run, but not all things worked out of the box. Especially
loading of modules will fail if modutils are to old. So the easiest thing for
me is to take an older 2.4.x kernel. And here is my question:

you don't need to patch the (guest) kernel when using 2.6.12. Just do a

Yes. You should be able to use it like any other file based filesystem.
If you have problems with the iso filesystem being readonly, then you
should be able to create a new file based filesystem using, for example,
ext2, and use 'cp -R' to copy all the file from the iso to the new
filesystem. Y
bunzip2 is part of the bzip2 package under Debian.
Alternatively, if you want a live distro that'll contain everything you
need, the LFS has their own LiveCD project that you can use:
