If you are using a Mac go to the Mac App store and do a search for icon. You will find quite a few apps for making icons. Some of them make cost a few dollars but the time saved and options may be worth it. They will provide you with the ability to make and icon for desktop or mobile apps and

Graham, i am using Axialis IconWorkshop since version 3, if i remember right. I am working completely on Mac, but IconWorkshop is one of 3 tools i am still using on windows. Not on a Windows computer, but on a virtual machine. You are right, it is a little bit pricey. But you get a lifetime l
