The crop dialog in gthumb is currently quite confusing. The main "crop
now" button is hidden in the upper left, diagonally opposite the main
button cluster. See for example:

KDE will also follow the freedesktop thumbnailing specification, which
specifies that thumbnails should be stored in ~/.thumbnails:
