Are you sure it's caused by the fglrx driver?

ATI FireMV 2250 cards (RV516 chip) have sideport memory, but does this

You can run the beta from the Live CD if you want. Just download the
.iso image and then burn it to a blank CD. When you reboot Ubuntu 10.10
"Maverick Meerkat" beta will offer you the option to try without

I seem to recall a Radeon DPMS fix going into the Linux kernel a while
back, but I can't fine it now. Can you try with the Ubuntu 10.10
"Maverick Meerkat" beta Live CD and let us know if you still get this

TOROK - a snapshot of the upcoming Mesa 7.9 (7.9~git20100909-0ubuntu1)
has just been added to Maverick. Can you boot the Maverick beta CD,
then reload the package info, then update Mesa and xserver-xorg-video-
ati and xserver-xorg-video-radeon, then test again (without the
nomodeset parameter)?

czubek - Mesa 7.9 is currently available for download via Update Manager
in Maverick Beta. I will be installed by default in the Maverick
Release Candidate (RC), and if no major problems are found it will be
installed by default in the Maverick final release. It will not be
available via Update M
