I had the problem on a Thinkpad x201. The underlying cause was actually a
file corruption in the packages.
I ran
debsums -s
One of the packages which was corrupted was
gnome-screensaver
Reinstalling gnome-screensaver (and several other packages) fixed the
problem.

RAM? If not, I think the synaptics driver should cache them and restore
them when coming back from suspend-to-RAM.

I don't have enable effects, as radeon doesn't allow me to do this (even if it
was working).
I created xorg.conf via running Xorg -configure. By default there all options
comments (dri, etc).
Should I set DRI options to false with rade
OK, I found that using "true" or "false" it's wrong. It should be "0" or "1".
So, using:

Option "DRI" "1" with radeonhd (by default it disable) driver make issue occur.

I'm having a very similar problem to this too, and I also suspect it's
probably something to do with the open source ATI drivers.
When booting from the Live CD (and I've tried the 64-bit and 32-bit
versions) I don't even get as far as the screen for installing/trying
Ubuntu/Memtest/checking the CD
I'm not sure (I don't completely understand the bug-tracking system),
but I think the status of this bug is currently "invalid" (for Linux) or
"fix-released" (for xorg-server), and consequently no-one is likely to

@Robert Hooker - Thank you, Alberto Milone's PPA solved the issue.
Desktop Effects activated with 96.43.17 and the password at GDM login is
now working!
This is what I have done:
-Installed Ubuntu Desktop i386 (20100419.1) test ISO on Wubi (ONLY TO TEST ;-) )
(Other Bug found & FIX - if installat
I've upgraded the system today and the icons appeared on the desktop and
all menus and tool-bars are looking fine.

I am on Ubuntu 9.10 64 bit with Dell Precision T3500 and experiencing
the same issue. Mouse cursor is there but I cant click on anything.
What helps is pressing Alt + F4 to close the active window and then the
mouse go back to normal. (Not always)
