It doesn't look like a d-bus error to me. I have the same issue on
karmik:

If i do
startx -- /usr/bin/Xnest -geometry 800x640 :2 &

all I get is a black Xnest window and a few messages like this one:
(EE) config/hal: NewInputDeviceRequest failed (2)

looking at ps f:
 2145 pts/0 S 0:00 \_ /bin/bash /usr/bin/startx -- /usr/bin/Xnest
-geometry 800x640 :2
 2163 pts/0 S 0:00 | \_ xinit /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc --
/usr/bin/Xnest -geometry 800x640 :2 -auth /tmp/serverauth.Ye3BMqKlp2
 2164 pts/0 S 0:00 | \_ /usr/bin/Xnest :0 -geometry 800x640 :2
-auth /tmp/serverauth.Ye3BMqKlp2

the /usr/bin/Xnest :0 -geometry 800x640 :2 line looks a bit weird, :0
should not be there, altough this doesn't appear to be the cause of the
issue.

Running:
Xnest -geometry 800x640 :2 &
export DISPLAY=:2
x-session-manager &

seems to work and spawns an usable X session with window manager and
all.
