classify it as "critical". I turned off and uninstalled the screensaver
on this computer, but apparently that is not enough to prevent Ubuntu
from going to sleep. It will go to sleep by itself even if there is NO
SCREENSAVER app
As a temporary work around, you can change virtual terminals (ctrl-alt
F1 through F6) and adjust your brightness there if you have hardware
keys, then switch back to your X session on VT7 with ctrl-alt F7. Still
cant change brightness inside the X session with hardware keys or power
manager, though
No brightness issues when I disconnect the external monitor while the
notebook screen has focus (click on a window or the empty desktop on the
notebook screen).

Sorry for taking so long to respond, I have tested out Fedora 13 and the
bug is not present whatsoever. I just did a clean format install of
Ubuntu 10.04, I did all the updates turned off compiz as Lourens Veen
said and the bug still exist. I can also confirm that sync to vblank in
compiz setting
After installing the new kernel from the link given by stenten there is
no longer a bug, I even tried out the 2.6.33 lucid trunk kernel and the
bug did not exist anymore. There just seems to be a problem with the
2.6.32 kernel and I am happy that everyone here helped me solve my
problem. The only

I was having an extreme graphics regression bug with Ubuntu Lucid, every
program I opened I encountered GUI problems, and this was with Compiz
turned off. I solved my problem by upgrading to kernel 2.6.34 by the

I think I'm suffering from the same problem. I have the same machine
(including graphics card) and the OS says it has to run in low graphics
mode. When I try to run in that mode, it sends me to the terminal. If I
choose recovery mode, then bail out and choose "resume normal boot",
then it does load
I have since upgraded to 13.10, and I haven't had this issue again that
I can remember. I think it is safe to close.

Seeing this and worse on a Lenovo ThinkPad T61 with nVidia Quadro 140M.
Anytime the lid is closed (whether this prompts suspend or not, whether
this locks the screen or not), re-opening the lid presents the desktop

There's no need to copy the header file into the 3.4 kernel. You just
have the patch the nvidia driver to add a preprocessor directive that
removes that line if the kernel version is 3.4 or higher.

Managed to fix my issue by switching to the nVidia proprietary driver. I
had a look at my Xorg.0.log and noticed that *none* of the drivers
seemed to be activating successfully. It looks like Nouveau eventually
kicked in, even after showing a failed to load message, but I'm not sure
