I now have fully functional Unity Desktops, on both of my computers,
after a wipe and fresh install. The main difference is no Google-Chrome.
I have Chromium on both machines and the system on both have been
updated. SO I think my problem was solved.

This only happens in yakkety. The same qtmir, qtubuntu and unity8 runs
fine in xenial. Lost a couple of hours on this issue yesterday and my
"solution" was to reboot my test laptop into a xenial partition so I
could unblock myself.

It took me some days and 26 kernel compilations, but I finally found the
first good commit. I thought kernel 4.6-rc1 carried the first good
commit, but it turns out it also had the bug: the first commit is in
