I did a reboot with the tv set on and everything was working fine. But
then I turned off the tv set. It seems as if the gui hasn't noticed

In the system you have, it doesn't appear to be switchable - some
outputs are only controlled by Intel, some outputs are only controlled
by nvidia. If you want to see anything on the panel, you need to enable
Intel. As the igfx is also the one used by the BIOS, it is declared the

I have just upgraded to Xubuntu 13.10 about a month ago, and i tested the above

Without notification, the system boots up but fails to operate. The screen
goes black, only the mouse arrow works.
On the same machine I installed "Boot repair" running from a DVD. Ubuntu live
worked fine. Checked all the hardware of my computer, all is OK.
