I can confirm this bug also on my card:
Ati Mobility radeon HD 4500, RV710
I always had overheating problems with the opensource driver, so I used
the binary driver from ATI.
Actually with the latest updates the ati-closed-driver doesn't work
anymore also on ubuntu 12.04

Tried the 3.9 kernel and raring a couple of days ago and was good for a
day but then the computer wouldn't revive after being locked so i
assumed that it must have full freezed whilst the monitor was sleeping.
I think i might have to wait till ubuntu switches to mir and maybe then

Like I said, processing the results from the GPU hang kills apport's GPU
reporting module. Every time it tries to process the log files for
packaging into a bug report, it dies. Then I get a bug report for apport
itself to file--and I think I did, in fact. Unsurprisingly, like all (?)

Installing xserver-xorg-video-intel-lts-quantal on Precise prevents X
display managers from loading (e.g., lightdm, kdm, lxdm, gdm). System
then either locks up on splash screen or on a well lit (backlit?) black
screen. ACPI is still responsive and a normal shutdown via the AC
I noticed that there was also a kenel package labeled with the "lts-
quantal" tag, so I decided to try that out. It works fine without the
xorg driver package, but there's no difference to the bug when both are
installed.

XWayland selects incorrect mode

The problem seems to happen when I am using the Firefox and/or the
Thunderbird. The screen freezes, the mouse loses control and I have to
do a hard reboot on the laptop. After rebooting, if the wireless was
initially on, it is off. This happens many times during the day but if

fixed in XMir by manually fixing the mode after generation.

Chris, you mention overriding the EDID. I have a similar problem using
the i915 driver with a laptop display that fails to report its EDID. I
have tried using drm_kms_helper, but I haven't gotten it to work yet.
