If I run the Ubuntu 12.10 (Quantal Quetzal) daily live image from USB,
brightness fuctions normally again, so it would seem the kernel
currently used in 12.10 has fixed this issue. Any way to get it fixed in

I have similar problem.
But my mouse moves but do not launches any event (click, etc...). I can switch
to another TTY and restart X, and everything work nice until next freeze.
I am using an core i7 laptop with 8GB RAM and Radeon HD6770M graphic

Sorry, you are correct the system was not upgraded. It is a fresh
install of 12.04.
I only used the word "upgrade" because yesterday, I was running 11.10
and decided to move to 12.04, though I did so via a fresh install.

Even in virtual console it freezes.
Steps I performed.
1) Login to my desktop session
2) Run command "pgrep Xorg" to get the pid. Lets say 1122
3) Then I pressed "control-alt-f2" to go to virtual console.
4) Run command "pgrep Xorg" to get the pid and it was same i.e 1122
5) Run comm
