I am running Cataylst drivers on ATI hardware and see the same behavior.
This needs to be moved to a more general topic than nvidia driver bug.
Also, it may be related, but often times the window will open with the
title bar and menus offscreen top left. Have to use the keyboard to move
it back.

switch from lightdm to gdm because lightdm causes another bug that makes
my system run at 100% CPU, but autologin with gdm has this problem.

It turns out that my problem was happening because of the presence of
oem-config and ubiquity. These should have been removed at the end of
installation, but they weren't. These were being started when X
started, which was perhaps causing the TTY to be stolen (by bterm).

You mentioned in the description that you reproduced it using xrandr;
please provide the command line you used to reproduce it there.
Enable modesetting debugging; one way to do this is run 'sudo
xdiagnose', it's the first checkbox. Reboot, reproduce the bug, and
then collect 'sudo dmesg > dmesg.

I posted a support question in the launchpad answers area and was
advised by someone there to contact you guys regarding my problem. To
save recreating another post and to limit confusion I have just included

take a look at

Xorgs started to freeze frequently, once a day or so.
Mostly screen freeze, mouse cursore continue to move, no reaction to mouse
clicks nor keyboard presses.
At least once, system managed to restore. After few seconds of screen
freeze screen blanked and returned to normally
