I'm still seeing this issue on karmic koala 9.10 (just upgraded today).
Using latest nvidia restricted drivers on a dual monitor setup.
The same workaround of switching to metacity still works. But I was
really looking forward (hoping!) to be able to use compiz again :-)

xrandr no longer causes deadlock. Instead, just switching to a text mode
console and back does not help. Someone should try with kernel mode
switch disabled and report, preferably upstream.

I tried your suggestion of sudo apt-key adv --recv-keys --keyserver
pgp.mit.edu 8D09D5BE298D57CC and it gave me the following, which looks
similar to your results, however, when I restarted the computer, the
mouse problem was still present.
Executing: gpg --ignore-time-conflict --no-opt
I've installed the final Karmic AMD64 on the 4GB USB pendrive and the X
works. Now the hardware drivers doesn't show my GeForce and I can't
install the proprietary driver :P

Just work if I put the "acpi=off" option in grub, but my intel video

/var/log/Xorg.0.log goes back several days prior to the problem.
Processes were started on Oct 29. Note log contains frequent messages
related to XINPUT as I use a KVM switch and a USB mouse and keyboard.

Thank you for the response , it is greatly appreciated.
I have installed Kubuntu too as i need to do Hindi typing using the virtual
typewriter KVkbd, as i could not do do in the Gnome desktop, perhaps i need
to remove Kubuntu to gain some space.
