I have resolved this. Yeah, it surprised me too. I had to completely
purge all of nvidia-glx and associated components from my system. This
is how I did it.
Shut down gdm, or kdm if appropriate
sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop
at black screen, go to login
ctrl + alt + f1

I have this same problem with Jackelope, Gnome, Compaq 6710b laptop
(intel dual core) 4GB ram, i965 graphics chipset. No compiz.
Since some documents pointed out that it might be caused by other
processes, I started killing all my processes one by one until I only
had the gnome-panel and terminal

There used to be an old -via driver but it's deprecated in favor or
-openchrome driver (which is the one that currently in used in Ubuntu).
The OpenChrome open source project has a homepage at

XAA does seem to eliminate the freezes -- I've been running for several
days without a problem.
Unfortunately it also seems to eliminate opengl -- at least, google earth warns
at startup that it's running in opengl software emulation. And glxinfo now says

This bug is a request for a backport of the DRI2 swapbuffer kernel
patches that jbarnes is working on. There is no work
[Setting a milestone on this since we'll want to make a decision on this
one once the kernel version for karmic is determined.]

Exact same issues as Heitzso. My RAM is also filled and haven't tried
removing any, but will soon.

Fix for PPA worked for me ( Radeon HD 3850), catalyst 9.4.
I just add to reinstall the catalyst proprietary drivers.
No issue with full screen video as of today.

The other day, Jesse mentioned that the dri2-swapbuffers branch would be
merged with the master for intel, I'm not sure about the other git trees
though.

thejinx0r: I'm not sure about a delay, but in general, the touchscreen
does seem to be slower than your average mouse in responding to touch or
repeated touches, and it would be nice to know if response time can be
improved. I just did not really take any time to look into it.
