Thank you for reporting this issue about xserver-xorg-video-nv. Starting
with Lucid, Ubuntu is transitioning to using the -nouveau video driver
by default instead of -nv. The reason for this change is because
upstream development for the -nv driver has been quite slow. We are

I tried as per your suggestion, I connected just one monitor and when I
booted the system with regular CD, it works perfectly fine. So, the issue is
dual monitor :)

Found the issue :) Finally !
Steps I followed:
1. Install command line version of Ubuntu
2. Install gnome-session x11-xserver-utils xinit package
3. Uninstall xserver-xorg-video-nv (this was causing the issue, we had 2
monitors connected to this system)
Now everything works fine as ex

I installed using alternate iso image (command line only mode). The
system was fine, then installed x11-server-utils, gnome-session, xinit,
system was fine.
Now I installed gedit / gnome-terminal, the system started hanging when
going to X mode. I could not see xorg.conf file. Grub promp

I'm unable to install using the Karmic live CD as the X hangs, do you
