Is there a step you can suggest that doesn't involving upgrading the
kernel?
My problem didn't occur when running 14.04 previously (before
reinstalling), so I find it hard to believe it's a kernel issue.

This seems like a pretty radical departure from my current installation,
which I'm hesitant to try. I can't arbitrarily hose this machine. What
guarantees do I have this will result in a working machine? Can you
provide rollback steps in case it doesn't boot or X doesn't start?

Nevermind, it's not really any more or less frequent after the BIOS
upgrade.
One further thing I've observed is that the cursor duplication IS more
frequent if I have open windows near the edges of the screens where the
transfer is taking place. If it's just the desktop, then the cursor
gets stu
