Thanks for the response, and very clear instructions on how to upgrade
the BIOS under Linux. It's much appreciated.

I upgraded the BIOS:

$ sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date
1402
08/09/2012

The problem of a duplicate cursor getting stuck on the previous screen
is much less common now, but does still occur. Especially when moving
the cursor from one screen to the other relatively quickly.

I should probably clarify that, like the original bug, this didn't
happen in Ubuntu 12.04. I upgraded that to Ubuntu 14.04 and the problem
still wasn't there. Then I wiped the machine and installed Kubuntu
14.04 directly, and the problem manifested itself.

Thanks for your continued help.
