I can confirm this. This morning after upgrading I found myself with a
US keyboard layout without realizing why, and with no way to get back to

In my machine matplotlib by default selects the "TkAgg" backend. I
worked around this freezing problem by selecting the "gtk3" backend
instead, as in 'ipython3 --pylab=gtk3'. I had to install
'python3-cairocffi' as requested by a warning at startup and now
everything seems to work well.

I have try again. Same result. I have purge first all the fglrx packages and
then sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade && sudo apt-get install
fglrx.
At reboot lightdm doesn't start. I look at /var/log/apt/term.log and I can see

No guys, I have try to install
fglrx_2%3a8.950-0ubuntu1~xedgers~precise1_amd64.deb packages and some
other dependecies from xorg-edgers ppa but after reboot I can't start
lightdm.

The problem is also present if I try the live cd (i386) on a Dell Mini
Inspiron 9 but with a variant, during the boot I see the Kubuntu logo
(usplash or xplash?) but after I not see the login screen but a black
screen with in the middle the mouse pointer frozen.
I think this is not only nVidia pro
If can help I use a 64bit version.

I have the similar problem with Kubuntu Karmic Beta (downloaded 10 oct. 2009).
The LiveCD boot is very slow with a black screen, but when show the login the
mouse and keyboard not works.
I have a nVidia GeForce 8400 GS card.
