A correction: The freeze does happen on nVidia Quadro NVS 290 (NV86),
but not on nVidia Quadro FX1500 (NV71GL). So it is a bug affecting only
newer nVidia hardware. I do not know if it happens on Ubuntu 64 Bit,
too. It should be patched as soon as possible.

The freeze does only happen on Ubuntu 9.04 32 Bit. The 64 Bit variant is
not affected.
Anyway, it would help to accelerate the driver update process. For
openSUSE, nVidia provides a package repository. Although nVidia updates
even to the 185 series which is not quite stable. I would prefer that

I manually installed the nVidia driver 180.60 (NVIDIA-
Linux-x86-180.60-pkg1.run). This driver resolves the issue!!!
The driver 180.60 is part of the 180 series and only an incremental (but
important) update. Please provide an update package for Ubuntu 9.04
(jaunty).
