I tested it with hdmi display. However, I can't guarantee it will work
with a pre-kepler card.

Just use our friend Michael Marley's ppa :
Add ppa, update cache, install nvidia-346 and reboot :
sudo bash -c "sudo add-apt-repository ppa:mamarley/nvidia -y && apt-get update
&& apt-get install nvidia-346 -y && reboot"
I hope nouveau will improve.
I saw the same thing on one of my desktop machine. Just a few different :
No remains of windows but sometimes a windows refuses to close then mouse
cursor slows down then, after some 10~12sec, all freezes. The dash usually
opens but sometimes, have to open some other windows in front of it.

No comeback from sleep

Same thing on a customer's machine with an AMD athlong 64 X2 4000+ and a 8400gt.
It's using proprietary driver.
Strange thing : If I change ACPI Suspend Type from S1&S3 to S1(POS),
then it goes to sleep (with a strange signal to monitor) then comes back
without problem.
Maybe it's a kernel proble

I tried a startx and It told me that I had the nvidia-313-updates kernel
modules... I removed it and reinstalled nvidia-expermimental-310 and
nvidia-cuda-toolkit.
But I can't use Unity !
