Interesting that noone reacted on the bug.
I was able to circumenvent the problem with the proprietary nvidia
drivers. Actually I wanted to avoid this on a new installation, but I'm
unable to work if the system freezes randomly if I enter a webpage with
a video or launch a video podcast :-(

This is a vanilla installation of 16.0.4 without any nvidia drivers,
just the default noveau installation.
When I launch chromium or a podcast via gpodder/totem the screen gets
marbled and the machine hangs /no reaction on mouse movements or
keyboard clicks or numlock on/off)
Trying to switch back to nvidia seems to not have worked correctly, thus
noveau is loaded as fallback and the machine just froze again.

After 2014-05-25 I switched to proprietary nvidia 331.38 for my GT218
[GeForce 210] graphics card and did not experience any more machine
freezes and display hickups.

My last comment seems to be wrong - the crash just happened with KDE, so
no direct connection to running Unity. System worked fine before
upgrading to 14.04.

The problem seems to be connected to unity. If I run a KDE session I
wasn't able to reproduce the problem, but unity just freezes after
running a while without me actively doing anything with the box (audio

The machine just freezes in my Unity session, sometimes after minutes,
sometimes after some hours.
Any audio is running about ten minutes longer before the machine either reboots
or Xorg is reloaded. Happens daily since updating to 14.04. I cannot change to

It's not a problem anymore since the nouveau driver is enabled by
default - dmesg says:

After performing an update to 11.10 nvidia failed to install correctly and
rendered the system unusable.

If I change my window manager to Gnome I am able to quit my session

The problem seems to be different since I'm not able to
deterministically start my X even with above mentioned workaround.
The manually changed xorg.conf yields to the same X-window-not-working-
handling. Neither trying to create a new config nor default low-graphics
mode is working. A service gmd
Since there were no updates available I had to manually set driver "vesa" in
/etc/X11/xorg.conf.
The "Try to restore X"-utility of ubuntu didn't work - even starting with a
plain new config for my hardware didn't yield to a working X session.

When I tried to update the original 8.04.2 to 8.10 I still experienced a
problem with X -
the resolution is detected fine, but the screen goes blank if you move the
mouse or hit a button.
If I changed console to F1F6 and returned to X after that I was able to see
the screen for the instant
