Hello. My situation was very complicated, and none of the fixes I found
would work. I am running a Nvidia GTX970 with an Intel CPU and using a
dual monitor setup. Ubuntu 17.04 was working very well. Later upgrading
to Ubuntu 17.10, the Nvidia graphics became an issue because of Wayland,
but I follo
also, still investigating. every one of these fixes all lead to the
same outcome for me - cannot boot with nvidia proprietary drivers
installed, or else stuck in a boot-loop after entering password at gdm
screen.

I ran into the no screens bug. Logging in resulted in a black screen for
many minutes after which the login screen reappeared and I am able to
login fine. A systemd watchdog kicks in during the many minutes to
restart systemd
