I'm currently working without an external display and without a docking
station/port replicator, and the screen just went black for a couple of
seconds. The system had been running for 1–2 hours at the time.

Thanks to the instructions posted by @cjjefcoat I was able to get 116 up
and running on my machine. The only difference was that after purging
the toolchain ppa I had to run update-alternatives to get gcc to point
to gcc-5.

With kernel 4.15.0-10 of ubuntu 18.04 the touchpad doesn't work.

The version in the toolchain ppa currently does not match the "retpoline"
changes in the new kernel ( see discussion above), so should not be used to
compile modules. Which is a pain if you still want to use a newer gcc
alongside for other purposes, because adding the ppa upgrades the default
gcc.
I'm not sure about shipping above mentioned patch, due to:
- MODULE_LICENSE("MIT");
+ MODULE_LICENSE("GPL");
But i guess GPL is a superset of MIT

Don't we need to cherrypick e.g.
https://devtalk.nvidia.com/default/topic/1026876/patch-for-387-34-and-
linux-4-15-0-rc1/
into all of them? Note that we need to SRU this back to xenial too, due
to hwe stack, no?

@matpen,
I had similar problems with gcc 5.4.1 on Ubuntu 16.04. I don't think
that version has been updated. My gcc 5.4.1 version was from the
ubuntu-toolchain-r/test ppa. I removed that repository and "downgraded"
to the official Ubuntu 16.04 gcc-5 (5.4.0-6ubuntu1~16.04.9). (See

I can use my Ubuntu 14.04.05 with kernel 4.4.0-112-generic normally, but
when it comes to booting with 4.4.0-116-generic Nvidia drivers don't
work. My gcc-4.8 version is "gcc (Ubuntu 4.8.5-2ubuntu1~14.04.1) 4.8.5"
and gcc-5 version is "gcc-5 (Ubuntu 5.4.1-2ubuntu1~14.04) 5.4.1

I am facing both the Nvidia problem (cannot login into gnome) and the
VirtualBox problem (cannot start VMs). I just tried all instructions
found here (reinstalling the kernel, even reinstalling VirtualBox and
DKMS modules manually) with both the official gcc and the new gcc-7 from
PPA, but no luck.
