Similar issue here too.
I could not login in Unity either. bug windowMaker worked.
The gnome session was weird, I could reset the session using the usual
"alt+F2 r enter", but I would be stuck at the same place again...
I have run the sudo nvidia-bug-report.sh while on windowMaker and before

I have tried isotope's fix of adding to /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/ a
file named 20-intel.conf with the following:
Section "Device"
Identifier "Intel Graphics"
Driver "intel"
EndSection
The fix works for me: X now starts on boot with my two external monitors
plugged in.
