Hi, Similar issue here too. I could not login in Unity either. bug windowMaker worked.
The gnome session was weird, I could reset the session using the usual "alt+F2 r enter", but I would be stuck at the same place again... I have run the sudo nvidia-bug-report.sh while on windowMaker and before the downgrade. I have downgraded all the package to 304.117-0ubuntu1 and it worked.
