I haven't observed anything like this either.
When the system/unity starts to lag, can you use perf to profile to see
where the CPU is going? And also checking xrestop and
/sys/kernel/debug/dri/0/i915_gem_objects would be useful to check video
memory consumption.

I removed my fglrx drivers, so I'm using open mesa drivers.
After reboot my maximum display resolution was 1280x1024, but my real maximum
