Unusual as I have a GTX470 on one machine and GTX260 on another. Both
x64 bit versions of Ubuntu 12.04 beta 2 - both fully updated and using
the new nvidia driver and both work fine.

I'm still getting crashes - three this morning shortly after logging on.
The only app open was Firefox, and this crashed as it was loading,
taking X with it. This also happened yesterday. After logging in three
times, the crashes stopped. Weird.

my memory serves me correctly, there are numerous problems trying to get
gnome and gnome-shell to work properly within xubuntu 12.04 , at this point

I tested the source from your link and it seems to be completely broken
for me. The kernel with latest commit: "drm/i915: manage PCH PLLs
separately from pipes". will produce oops on the start. Se attached
dmesg. I also tryed to reset the source to HEAD~1, b
http://cgit.freedesktop.org/~ickle/linux-2.6/log/?h=bug48652 will
provide the context you need to apply it. However Jesse mentioned that
the ux31e is a CPU eDP and so doesn't use a PCH PLL anyway (and in
theory not affected by the patch).

I'm wondering if this is related to bug 44039. The issue would appear to
be that it is unable to find a free PLL (or the like) for the eDP after
it is turned off. eDP isn't limited to the first pipe, so it should be
happy to attach to the second CRTC, just a puzzle as to why it did not.

I tried the Ubuntu 12.04-beta2 LiveCD and decided to click on install
and after reboot I have only a black screen (Monitor shows: No Signal)
but the system is up as I can ssh into the box and reboot/shutdown it

My monitor is a Samsung SyncMaster 226BW. It has an optimal resolution of
1680x1050 which Ubuntu 12.04 is not finding. All I get is 1024x768.
I am able to manually set the optimal resolution with the xrandr command
although I am still having trouble making it stick through
For future googlers: dconf-editor is an easier way to set the (very
stupid) gnome middle-button setting.
Run dconf-editor from a command prompt and navigate to org::gnome
::settings-daemon::mouse. You should see the middle-button-enabled
checkbox in the right-hand panel.
