Thanks. I don't believe it is a proprietary driver issue. This is using the
stock FOSS X.org intel (i965) drivers.
Plus, the bug has been traced to the mesa/dri code which is totally FOSS.
It has been fixed in the i915 code but not yet in the i965 code.

Just added natty-proposed to get a newer stable kernel.
Now running against 2.6.38-10-generic without any special boot option
(ACPI is loaded as I have indicator-cpufreq running fine) and the

Actually, it's worse. It's back to completely unusable external monitor. If I
boot with it plugged in, I get multicolor flashing screen / unusable. If I plug
it in after logging, the screen goes black and useless. If I unplug it to
recover, I get a black responseless screen with an arrow cursor
Solution, that worked for me: download 2.6.37-6 kernel from kernel.org,
configure (used config from 2.6.32-25 kernel), compile, create and
install deb packages (image & headers); install 275.09.07 nvidia driver
for new kernel. "NVRM: in this system is not supported" disappeared.
