Nope, -ati is needed since it's just a wrapper to load the real driver
(so 1 doesn't fly). Getting rid of -ati would mean hardcoding device
identifiers in the servers, instead of just matching the vendor id.

That log looks like it's actually likewise-open that's failing, although
brasero is also suspicious; that log shows the xserver-xorg-core Breaks
(correctly) causing apt to remove xserver-xorg-video-v4l. Moving to the
likewise-open package.
There are still some drivers which need rebuilds, though.

I have the same problem as mudhead. I'm running Ubuntu 10.10 AMD64 on a
Dell T3500 workstation w/ ATI v5800 and 3 screens (1 rotated, 2
horizontal). I can use ATI Catalyst to rotate the display and work
happily. I just have to un-rotate before shutdown so I can reboot
later.

combination of them and both gave the same results of an unusable
GUIand by the looks of it its started doing this stuff sence a few
patches by whats came up on the upstream bug report, so you might want
to keep checking on

I finally got around to trying "ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates" and
installed their latest nvidia driver (270.18). I just wanted to report

10.04 -> 10.10 upgrade fails: pkgPr
I suspect this problem to be connected with the overall performance of
the computer. There is most probably a race condition between gnome
settings and gnome, because as far as all posts go it can be easily
fixed by waiting for two seconds before trying to load gnome settings. I
have many computers
Updating the intel X driver with the lasted version from
ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates repository seem to solve the issue.
And also, the bug #662071 seem to be a duplicated of this bug.

I have now switched to an older tft - 1440*900 and the problem seems to
be gone.
I would like to switch back though - but I guess the graphics card can't take
it somehow.

Same problem here. Using a Macally Icekey keyboard
The Volume up key on this keyboard produces "keycode 160 (keysym
0x1008ff2d, XF86ScreenSaver)" using xev. And it seems this
"XF86ScreenSaver" is hard coded somewhere in X or gnome so you can't
reallocate it using the usual gnome keyboard shortcut
