Nope, -ati is needed since it's just a wrapper to load the real driver (so 1 doesn't fly). Getting rid of -ati would mean hardcoding device identifiers in the servers, instead of just matching the vendor id. That's not going to happen either. The third option would mean saving a mere 400kB on the disk for no real benefit so that's not going to happen either, sorry.
