then what is it that displays the splash screen prior to reaching the X
display manager (kdm or gdm)?

Hi, some useful hints: on my system, with intel g3100, the screen goes totaly
black if I have firefox open, otherwise it dims and can be restored with the
xgamma trick.

eventually something "clicked" and I have both screens running just fine
now. I know that isn't terribly helpful, I wish I could point out

Just got around to testing with 10.4 Beta 2 and the problem doesn't
present at all. In fact the "mtrr: no more MTRRs available" message

Hi, this is a real PITA, see bug 301958 and

this card (771/671) is not detected and there is no bloody driver for it
on the kernel.
I was a provider of 32 and 64-bit karmic and Jaunty drivers on my site
because most of these good people can't compile
I can now switch to the guest session, but when I logged out of there I
had to do a ctl+alt+Backspace to get to the login window again.

Following behavior for me:
- Brightness keys show the OSD but don't change anything.
- Adjusting the slider in KDE4's battery applet does change the brightness
- changing the power profile in the battery applet also changes the brightness
(as would be expected from the point above)
- volume keys w

I can confirm MyR in #15.
In Lucid (Ubuntu 10.04) right-click is still not working.
Instead: Pushing the right-click button is recognized as a middle click.
(One may try this out in evince: You can scroll through a document without
clicking. Pretty cool, somehow...)

Suffer exactly the same issue with a Dell Latitude D505. Intel 855GME
video chipset. Upgraded to RC and stem stops on restart. Tried
reinstalling from RC disk and suffered same issues with a known good CD.

Seems to be an issue with the "leftOf" directive in xorg.conf and
Xinerama
A temp workaround is to use only "RightOf" directives
I just redid my xorg.conf with only "RightOf" directives, re-arranged my
monitors physically to match that of the new xorg.conf and it is
working fine

Ah the problem is you had xorg-edgers installed when you did your
upgrade, that leads to very bad problems like you are experiencing
libgl1-mesa-glx 7.9.0~git20100407.78fd65fd-0ubuntu0sarvatt~karmic
Mesa in there has a higher version than that of lucid, but mesa is
drastically different in lucid

One thing I wanted to note is that while the installation was ongoing, I
was using cairo-dock (OpenGL mode) with ATI's proprietary drivers...
