I'm aware of that “big hammer” patch from the upstream bug. The problem
is that it's not a fix - reports on the upstream bug indicate that it
reduces the incidence of crashes, and the analysis by upstream is that
it simply introduces a delay which makes it less likely to trigger the

This is not a bug; sadly it is the expected behaviour. DRI has been
disabled on these chips to try to avoid triggering bug #541492 and bug
#541511. This is a serious functional regression, but the problem it
tries to avoid is critical - no effects is better than a system that
freezes immediately

Just happened to me after 137 days of uptime on my Acer Aspire 5570-2607
laptop, when trying to open Totem to play an audio file (probably the
visualization triggered it, compiz was enabled too). Kernel is 2.6.31-15
in Ubuntu 9.10, video is:

Using 10.04 Beta 2. I can set up my dual-monitors with a total desktop

Sorry for the delay but after some professional issues, I made some
manipulations on my laptop, and yesterday I managed to boot on the
2.6.31.1-855gmtest599-git522bb74 kernel.
I installed both image and headers, in first the boot seem to freeze,
but after booting on a previous kernel version with

I experience exactly the same on Ubuntu 9.10 with the Core i3 540
processor on the P7H55-M PRO motherboard -- all are new, recently bought

I'm experiencing the same problem with both Karmic and Lucid
My hardware is a MSI mainboard MS-7536 with an Intel 945G/GZ Integrated
Graphics chip.
The screen freezes after a short while, sometimes even before the desktop is
loaded...
Mouse pointer was every time unmovable/unusable.

It happened again and this time I was able to reboot my system with
sysrq keys. kern.log shows this:
