The situation is still: If I start up in recovery (text) mode, I can use
the script in comment #2 to start gdm and a couple of other daemons that

feels that this is a screen driver problem, rather than an upstart
problem, but I'm not sure about that.

It is happening again and again, after leaving my workstation up for
long time (3 days or more) and rebooting... gdm starts in low graphics
mode after showing an error of No Valid Modes. I have to shutdown and
disconnect the power plugs for about 15 minutes, then power up agai
I restarted it a few more times (without radeon.modeset=0) to see if any
other bizzare things would happen. Twice, I got to the screen with an
underscore in the corner, but it had a (moveable) mouse cursor in the
middle. Doing Ctrl-Alt-F1 got me to a text terminal. Switching back to

I've got a similar bug in Karmic on my Samsung N130.
At a random point of time xorg crashes without an obvious reason.

x11perf command I gave (I can crash Xephyr with it). When X crashes out
rather than freezing, it's because of that. So it turns out this isn't a
good test of the driver.

Very strange, now I have reinstalled updates from xorg-edgers again and indeed
found slight improvement of the performance! Maybe thanks to the newer version
of mesa. Synaptic says mesa is 7.8.0 now (was 1.6.0), Intel driver is 2.10.0
(was 2.9.0), xserver-xorg-core is 1.6.5 (was 1.6.4).

I have a similar problem since upgrading Lucid Alpha 2 to 2.6.32-12.
My system boots to a different virtual terminal which does display the
