additional API layers which in fact may change upstream in ways we

I must be a complete idiot. I tried patching, as per #256. All seemed to be
going ok.
Got the same errors as #236. Proceeded to install. Rebooted.

Found new clue: if I generate a xorg.conf then set option "accelmethod"
"EXA", the "tartan" effect goes away and everything looks good. On the
other hand performances are poorer, even in firefox.
Maybe the trouble has to be in XAA method, which seems to be changed
from jaunty to karmic.

Just applied the xserver-xorg-backclear.patch. Everything goes faster,
very nice speed of maximizing, unminimizing windows. Testing the memory
leakeage now. Will report later

Just a few minutes ago, I tried switching to a console on this
Averatec 3280 laptop, and the text screen was normal - no flashing
colors. And the version of the driver is still
$ dpkg -s xserver-xorg-video-openchrome

So, as I was beginning to suspect
Perhaps a better option would be to disable Xorg's acceleration for
Synaptics device only, rather than disabling the Synaptics acceleration.
When I disable Synaptics acceleration and use Xorg's acceleration, the
pointer is still extremely sensitive to small movements, and this makes
it hard to hit
Does the stability return if you downgrade to an earlier version of
mesa? For your convenience we've packaged the prior version in the
x-retro ppa:

If that fixes it, then this is indeed a regression. There was a bunch
of new 3D suppor
Also, upstream tends to prefer focusing on one bug per bug report, so we
do as well. I'm going to limit this bug report specifically to "crash
in _mesa_PopAttrib()". You had mentioned general stability so I'm
curious if you see other crashes besides this one; if so please create a
new bug report

Looking forward a few months, I'd like to not have this bug open after
Lucid. I think we need to come to a decision on it and either implement
it for the LTS, or else decide to stay with the current system and close
this bug.
This would be a pretty significant change, so might be a bit ambitious
