Hrm, bummer. Well this new issue is a separate bug, an X freeze.
Basically, the GPU has locked up, which is why restarting X isn't
sufficient to get it going again. gdb doesn't really give anything
useful for X freeze bugs, but we have other tools for gathering data on
that.

Excellent, thanks for letting us know the original issue is resolved.

In order to upstream this, I'd need a full set of debug files from the
person who has verified the problem on karmic. So I need either for
Baard to test karmic, or for you to provide the full set of files that
Baard did. I can't mix your verification with his files, since the two

This bug dates to at least 2006. Basically, running "xclock -digital"
should give you a small window with a digital clock.
Today I've temporarily loaded Windows 2000 on this HP Brio.
Initially it came up in 1280x768, which looked rather naff, though
readable. No updates needed, just Control Panel, Display, Settings and
one of the choices was 1280x1024 8-bit colour. This worked. It worked
very well indeed, it's beau

Do note 2.6.31-1 still has the "font smear" problem that upstream video
says is fixed on bugzilla 21415. Either their fix doesn't work or else
Ubuntu hasn't picked it up. There's a launchpad bug # 304514 for that.
Much less of a problem than "it doesn't boot at
