Upgraded and writing this from karmic alpha-2; I could not report before because there are so many bugs and issues which make this Macbook1,1 unusable in Ubuntu [from intermitent WiFi up to X11 hanging because the new KMS :(]...
The good news is that this bug is almost resolved: in Mac OS X 10.4 there are 17 levels of brightness including no light; in Ubuntu there are 21 levels of which the two brightest seems to be the same (repeated: same brightness) and the two darkest seems to be the same (repeated: no light); But the feeling and user experience is the expected: no random jumps of light and decreasing/increasing the brightness works as expected. If this works the same in the final karmic release, I would consider this bug closed.
