Hi Everyone,
I'm really new to the Ubuntu scene; got involved about 6 months ago.
Everything has been working fine until a recent update session. An
incomplete update was signalled (I 'd just installed ClamTk and PiTiVi a
day or so earlier. At first the screen dropped into 'basic' low-res
mode.

Thanks Neil - that helped quite a lot.
I've done the usual back-ups, making use of the really useful Live user
mode.
I've not actually gone for a reinstall YET - still trying to pull
together as much good advice as I can before taking the plunge! I'm
already feeling better informed though - tha
Thanks Guy,
I followed your second suggestion - using Live CD to examine Xorg.0.log.
I found the following error flag:
Failed to initialise GLX extension (Compatible NVIDIA X dribver not
found)
That was the only entry.
What is the significance of the other log files (Xorg.0.log.old,
Xorg.9.
Hi Everyone,
I too can vouch for Keir Thomas & Jaime Sicam's book - although it
hasn't got me out of my scrambled scren 'hole' yet, it was a real
support while I was styarting out on the Linux road. Add to that the
Live user mode on the DVD which is still in use until I can summon up
the courag
Hi everyone,
Sorry for the lousy typing on my last post!
My 'scambled screen' hardware has Ubuntu 8.04LTS OS.
Two 'supporty' CDs were delivered with the system:
a. Asus P5B-VM SE 'graphics integrated Motherboard'
b. Inno3d Graphics GeForce Drive CD Ver 12.1.
I have made backups of my home direct
Thanks for the tips - still need my hand held!
I backed up my home directory a while ago - I think I did it through
Nautilus / Brasero - but wasn't aware that there might be hidden files.
I've not been able to find where GRAMPS saves its data although I have
found a lot of its material in /usr/
Hi Everyone,
Back to my scrambled screen system - I've been functioning via Live User
DVD now for several weeks. I suppose my basic question - skirted around
via a number of little excursions - is, 'If I reinstall Ubuntu (8.04)
will my system 'remember' all of the material I've created and/or input
Hi Rob & Neil,
I have no problem accessing my hard disc from Live DVD - I can read and
write everything from the disc once I've set myself up as a new user. As
far as I'm aware, everything is in one partition - in other words, no
partitioning of the hard drive.
If anyone hasn't used Live User fr
Thanks Rob,
I think your bits about backing up /home is something I've already done
- thnaks for the confirmation!
I'll try your suggestions about GRAMPS a.s.a.p. and report back.
Thanks again for your (and others) help.

Thanks to everyone who has contributed to my scrambled screen issue.
I've almost come to the conclusion that the quickest way to get
everything back to full functionality would be to reinstall Ubuntu 8.04.
I've taken on-board two key issues (I think) that ought to retain all of
the information s
Thanks Vinu - that tends to confirm what I'd thought. Helps when you get
it confirmed!
I'm assuming that provided I've backed up all of my home directory -
including all the hidden files - I will have got everything working
again when I've reinstalled Ubuntu, including all my e-mails. I can get
Thanks to everyone who contributed. I take the points raised - and find
the willingness of listers to help us beginners. Just be warned - I may
be asking a lot of questions.
Many thnaks in anticipation!

Hi Everyone,
Have just initialised our new batch of Toshiba laptops for our village
IT Group. These come with Microsoft Vista 'preinstalled' which has now
been completed. When I tried to use our Ubuntu 8.04 disc in Live User
mode, the laptop seemed to launch Ubuntu in the usual way, but part way
