OK I am still working on this.
got as far today as:
sudo modprobe rt73
then a restart with it plugged in.
it booted up with the dongle alive (a first)
also found wireless networks in network-manager (a first)
but trying to connect and it just hangs whilst connecting... it never
gets anywhere.

Just checked - you're running the rt2500 driver, you need to be running rt73.

Sounds like the wrong driver.
Switch tack - what are the errors when you try to compile the Linux
drivers it came with?

I have acquired an Edimax USB Wireless dongle, hoping it would just
plug-n-play with Ubuntu but it hasn't, or at least not on the laptop I
am trying to install it on, an old Dell Latitude.
