OK I am still working on this. got as far today as:
sudo modprobe rt73 then a restart with it plugged in. it booted up with the dongle alive (a first) also found wireless networks in network-manager (a first) but trying to connect and it just hangs whilst connecting... it never gets anywhere. Not sure how to monitor or find out whats stopping it connecting. Any help would be much appreciated.
