That presumably means that I could write my own dynamic dns script -
would just be a case of sending instructions to an external server to
update the zone for whatever the domain is I want to be hosted
locally?

tracert suggests that your machine thinks it's called jrh.co.uk not joshh.co.uk
Also you need BOTH nameservers to be pointing to your machine.
At the moment you appear to have the first nameserver set to
joshh.co.uk (and an IP) and the second nameserver set to

OK, a step in the right direction. I have registered joshh.co.uk and can
now ping my own server through the domain. I followed the tutorial

Josh,
I suggest you read up a bit about hosting - Google for "domain
registration" and read what it says.
123reg's control panel allows you to change your nameservers to point
to your own server. That's what it's for. You also use it to renew
your domain registration every 2 years.

Nominet's fees are arbitary. They don't wish to sell them, hence they
hike the price.
http://123reg.co.uk is £2.50+VAT or similar (works out about £6.06
from memory) for 2 years.
