I believe it does use Wine for everything. They just code the application on
Windows, they don't have "true" Linux support...

It is a shame that Ubuntu isn't on more powerful hardware. I recently bought
a new laptop and had to buy one with Windows 7 (I didn't even boot into it,
straight format and install of Ubuntu!) because all of the Linux based ones

I have used one of these dongles (different network, same hardware) and
Network Manager just configured it for me. It was a Vodafone one that I set
up, perhaps if the Orange ones continually refuse to work you could try a
Voda one to see if it is your configuration or something that Orange has
done
