I am new linx user (2 weeks ago)

`/usr/local/bin/gift-old-to-new
I tried installing with gdebi and it refused to install due to unmet
dependencies. But it did tell me what I needed to install, which I
installed with synaptic, and then gdebi let me install VirtualBox.
Although I do not know why it needed an extra file, as I had 2.2.4
installed previously whic

problem a while back where I had to tinker with the font smoothing (or
something like that) to get the menu's to appear. Same deal with

That depends how you install it.
If you either use the repository Innotek/Sun/Oracke/Whoever provide
and install via apt/aptitude/synaptic then it will resolve that

You also need to install libcurl3 if you do not have it already before
installing VirtualBox 3.0.

I have to say, Norman, that's the first time I've ever heard of such a thing.
I'd recommend he re-installs Openoffice in the first instance (ie. go
to Synaptic and uninstall, then install) and if that doesn't work
re-install Ubuntu... and ideally 9.04 rather than 8.10 (though that is

I am using 9.04 and also cannot drag the panels, although I do not
really want to. As Alan Lord (news) said in his reply, you can right
click, select Properties and choose the location on the screen.
I am also using Firefox 3.0.11 and have not had the problems you
describe. I currently have abo
My brother is venturing into the land of Ubuntu and has installed (so he
tells me) 8.10. He is happy as can be with everything he has tried so
far with the exception Of OpenOffice. He reports that when he runs the
application he is presented with a screen with no bars at all including
the menu bar.
Download the latest version from

The latest version is 3.0.0, which I only just discovered when checking
the download page. I was using 2.2.4, which was good.
Do not use the Ubuntu repository version, as it does not have support
for USB.

IIRC the USB feature is not available in the OSE supplied in the Ubuntu
I am seriously considering installing VirtualBox and would welcome some
advice on which version to go for. I shall be running Ubuntu 9.04 and
would like to be able to use USB.
Thanks in advance

An update arrived and live radio is working for me too now. I wonder if

Also, does anyone else find that Firefox 3 0 11 freezes rather often? It is
then hard to shut down, despite using the Force Quit butto
