Do you still get this error with Metacity? If so, (and it would seem
likely from the message displayed), you have a problem with the GNOME
Settings Daemon (as the message says), and you should file a bug,
although I'm not sure the name of the package that that comes in. If you

Personally, I think Linus is being short-sighted. When we have much,
much more power, and companies are actively begging to support Linux,
THEN we make the switch. This would push them, through their clamouring,
to create open specs at the very least, or better, to release GPL
drivers.

This list is for Kubuntu users as

the desktop after a successful login.
It sits there, with a light grey box taking up 1/4 of the screen (top
left side) and only the cursor, then after a few minutes the login
splash appears, the login sound plays and the desktop
