Do you still get this error with Metacity? If so, (and it would seem likely from the message displayed), you have a problem with the GNOME Settings Daemon (as the message says), and you should file a bug, although I'm not sure the name of the package that that comes in. have a problem where Ubuntu 6.10 with beryl 1.3 takes ages to display the desktop after a successful login. It sits there, with a light grey box taking up 1/4 of the screen (top left side) and only the cursor, then after a few minutes the login splash appears, the login sound plays and the desktop
